If you run a UK-registered Muslim charity, the cheapest-looking crowdfunding platform on day one is often the most expensive at year-end. Platform fees, payment processing, Gift Aid handling, donor-data ownership, and Sharia-review costs all stack up differently. This guide is what we wish more charity trustees asked us about before they signed up.
A 5% headline fee is rarely the whole story.
The five real costs
1. Platform fee
Usually 0% to 7% of each donation. Some platforms (LaunchGood, JustGiving Crowdfunding) let donors voluntarily cover the platform fee, which can shift this to near-zero on the charity side. AmalQ's fee model is published on our pricing page.
2. Payment processing
Stripe and similar processors charge 1.4% to 2.9% plus 20p per transaction in the UK. We've seen the lower end on UK debit cards and the higher end on international cards. This is unavoidable on every platform; the question is whether the platform passes the actual cost through or marks it up. It's worth asking the platform directly, since some quietly add 0.5% on top.
3. Gift Aid handling
Gift Aid is the single biggest financial lever a UK charity has. HMRC adds 25p for every £1 a UK taxpayer donates, on top of the donor's gift. On £100,000 raised, that's £25,000 of additional income.
Some platforms claim and forward Gift Aid automatically; others leave the charity to claim it themselves. The latter saves a small fee but adds operational work; if your charity has 4,000+ small donations, claiming manually becomes a significant time sink.
4. Donor data ownership
This is the cost most charity trustees miss until year two. If the platform owns the donor email list, you can't easily remarket to your own donors when you launch the next campaign. Read the data clauses carefully. AmalQ shares donor data with the charity by default, with consent. Some larger platforms restrict this, especially around email permissions.
5. Sharia review
Some platforms include scholar review in their fee; others charge separately or expect the charity to source it. Verified Sharia review costs typically run £500-£2,500 depending on the model, but only needs doing once per campaign type. Worth budgeting for explicitly.
Comparing the four UK options
| Platform | UK Gift Aid | Sharia review | Donor data | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AmalQ | Auto-claimed | Built in | Shared with charity | UK-aware Islamic giving |
| LaunchGood | Charity self-claims | Per-campaign | Limited sharing | Global reach + brand |
| JustGiving | Auto-claimed | None | Shared with charity | Mainstream UK reach |
| Donorbox | Auto-claimed | None | Full ownership | Self-hosted donate buttons |
Decision framework
Three questions, in order:
- Is your audience predominantly UK Muslim? If yes, AmalQ or LaunchGood. If you also serve non-Muslim donors, JustGiving widens your reach.
- Do you need Sharia review built in? If yes, AmalQ. Other platforms require you to source it separately.
- How much do you value owning your donor list? If a lot, Donorbox or AmalQ. Be careful with platforms that restrict data sharing.
- What's your campaign volume? Single annual Ramadan campaign vs continuous appeals changes the calculus around fees and Gift Aid automation.
A worked example
A small UK Muslim charity raises £80,000 across 1,200 donations averaging £67 each. In our data, 65% of donors tick the Gift Aid box (typical for UK Muslim donor bases, though it ranges 58-72% by campaign). The headline numbers:
- Platform fee at 5%: £4,000
- Payment processing at 2%: £1,600
- Gift Aid uplift on £52,000 of eligible donations: £13,000 added
- Net to charity, before Gift Aid: £74,400
- Net to charity, after Gift Aid: £87,400
- Time spent on Gift Aid claims if manual: 6 to 10 hours per claim cycle
The Gift Aid uplift here is 3.25 times bigger than the platform fee. Choose for Gift Aid efficiency first, fee second.
A note on Charity Commission registration
If your charity raises over £5,000 a year, you're typically required to register with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Registration unlocks Gift Aid eligibility and gives donors confidence; it also adds reporting obligations. The number is shown on your campaigns and matters when donors evaluate trust.
Frequently asked questions
- Do all UK Muslim crowdfunding platforms support Gift Aid?
- Most do for UK-registered charities, but the level of automation varies. AmalQ and JustGiving auto-claim Gift Aid for eligible donations. LaunchGood typically leaves the charity to claim through its own HMRC account. Donorbox automates it for charities on its higher tier.
- Can my Muslim charity run a campaign on multiple platforms at once?
- Yes, but be careful. Splitting effort dilutes momentum, and donors may give twice if the campaigns aren't clearly differentiated. A common pattern: run the headline appeal on one platform, run a smaller secondary campaign for a specific sub-project on another.
- What happens to leftover funds if my campaign overshoots the target?
- Each platform handles overage differently. Most allow charities to keep the excess for the same cause; some let donors opt out. Critically: if you state a specific use of funds, UK charity law requires you to honour that. Stretch goals must be communicated transparently before donors give to the surplus.
- How long does Gift Aid take to land in my charity bank account?
- Typically 4-6 weeks after the donation, depending on HMRC processing and whether the platform auto-claims or you claim manually. Plan cash flow around this. Donors give in March; the Gift Aid uplift may not arrive until mid-April or later.
- Can a non-charity entity raise on these platforms?
- Some platforms allow non-charity entities (CICs, individuals, mosques without charity status). Gift Aid does not apply unless the recipient is a registered charity. AmalQ supports both registered charities and verified community projects, with different visibility on each.
- What if my charity gets a Sharia compliance complaint mid-campaign?
- Pause the campaign while you investigate. Engage the platform's compliance team and your scholar advisor. Document the resolution publicly via campaign updates. Donors generally accept honest, fast handling; what damages trust is silence or denial.
